Let’s be honest, bank switching isn’t exactly glamorous. But if you’re not doing it, you’re leaving real money on the table. There’s over two grand sitting in switching bonuses across UK banks right now, and the beer money crowd has been all over it. Here’s the breakdown of what’s actually live, what to watch out for, and how to squeeze the most out of the current round of offers.

How to Stack Cashback on Top

Here’s where it gets interesting. The real winners aren’t just doing one switch – they’re layering cashback sites on top to multiply the return.

Step 1 – Before You Do Anything Else

Sign up to a cashback site like TopCashback or Quidco. Then search for the bank you’re planning to switch to and see if there’s a cashback offer attached to the account opening. This is free money on top of the switching bonus.

Step 2 – Grab a Trading212 Referral

You can get a free share worth up to £100 via Trading212 when you sign up. It’s not a switching bonus, but it’s genuinely free money for doing almost nothing. Worth stacking while you’re at it.

Step 3 – Revolut and Curve

Revolut doesn’t have a formal switch bonus, but their referral programme adds up quickly if you get a few friends signed up. Curve is similar – their referral scheme gives you cashback on spending, which isn’t huge but it all counts.

Step 4 – Don’t Forget Monzo

It’s a solid free account for everyday banking and signing up via referral keeps the circle of free money going.

💡 Heads Up: Most banks require you to use the Current Account Switching Service (CASS), which closes your old account. So plan the order carefully – don’t switch away from an account you actually use before you’ve set up the new one properly.

What Caught People Out Last Time

  • Once per person per bank – don’t try to game this, they track it.
  • Cooling-off periods – you usually can’t have had an account with that bank recently. Read the T&Cs.
  • Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland share exclusions – if you’ve switched to any of these since 1 January 2023, you won’t get the Lloyds bonus. Caught so many people out.
  • First Direct is strict – if you’ve had a First Direct or HSBC account since January 2018, forget it. HSBC has been known to refuse payout if you’ve had any account with them in the prior 3 years.
  • Barclays Premier cut-off – you can’t open a Barclays Premier account if you held any Barclays account on or after 17 February 2026.

How CASS Works (It’s Simple)

  1. Open your new bank account and apply for the switch offer through the cashback site
  2. Set up the required deposits and direct debits in the new account
  3. Request the switch via CASS – everything moves automatically (direct debits, standing orders), and your old account closes
  4. Wait 28–45 working days after criteria are met for the bonus to land
  5. Move on to the next one

From opening to cash in hand, you’re looking at roughly 6–8 weeks per switch.

💰 Pro Tips From People Who’ve Done This a Few Times:

  • You don’t need to switch your main account. Open a dedicated switching account, smash the criteria, then close it after the bonus lands.
  • Cheap direct debits are your friend. Set up a couple of small charity donations or recurring payments to hit DD requirements without spending money.
  • Track everything in a spreadsheet – date opened, criteria required, date criteria met, bonus expected, bonus received.
  • HSBC is unpredictable. They’ve been known to decline payouts if your history with them isn’t clean. Don’t assume you’ll definitely get paid.

Honestly? If you’ve got the time and a bit of organisational ability, bank switching is one of the easiest ways to make meaningful money with zero risk. You’re not investing, you’re not gambling – you’re just moving money between banks that are literally paying you to do it.

With over £2,000 in total offers available right now, there’s real money here. The Lloyds and Barclays standard offers alone are worth £400+ if you do them both before their April deadlines. Stack the cashback sites on top, and you can push that significantly higher.

Just stay organised, read the terms properly before you start, and don’t miss the deadlines. The money’s there – go get it.

*Always double-check the specific bank’s current terms before committing to a switch. Offers and eligibility criteria change, and what’s available today may not be tomorrow.*
